Reflection of Scholarship/Education
The essential aspects of scholarship of medical education in anesthesia are reflection and research of the endeavor of our education. Middle Tennessee School of Anesthesia affords many opportunities in research and advancements in anesthesia. I believe being involved and participating in activities from making policy decisions to curriculum design are adjuncts to expanding our profession. I was fortunate to be able to participate in scholarship opportunities at MTSA such as a project formulated to discovery the effects of Lidocaine infusions during perioperative phase to improve surgical outcomes and decrease the use of opioids. This project is beneficial in the anesthesia community because of the opioid crisis we face today, it is amazing that we can make positive contributions and tailor our anesthetics while still maintaining an anesthetized patient experiencing minimal pain (presentation included below). I have also had the opportunity to participate in the TANA meetings for the CRNAs and SRNAs of Tennessee. While there I found many topics exposed in anesthesia and ways to improve our practice and profession. A particular presentation that stands out to me is a project implemented by one of the local CRNA programs that experiments with cadaveric lung tissue to improve the use of fiber optic scope among nurse anesthetists. Projects such as these allow our learning processes to be realistic just as if we were actually taking care of one of our patients. Scholarly opportunities such as these allow public sharing and the opportunity for application and evaluations by other qualified anesthesia providers to improve our profession. We as medical providers recognize that healthcare is highly influenced by evidence based material therefore it is crucial for our profession to continue to evolve with the world of medicine.
